FONASBA and its members are committed to the furtherance and expansion of education and training within the global ship broking and ship agency sectors. This commitment is enshrined in FONASBA’s Code of Conduct, to which all associations must adhere, which states in Chapter 2:

Members will

1.       employ experienced professionally qualified staff to cover all aspects of the business being undertaken, so as to ensure the proper performance of all the functions of ship agent and shipbroker,

2.       encourage such staff to improve its professional capacity qualifications by assisting it to study and pass examinations based on the syllabi of recognised international shipping authorities/educational institutions.

and this is also a key component of the Quality Standard.

Operating in an increasingly complex and regulated sector of the maritime industry, ship brokers and ship agents must be trained and educated to a very high standard in order to ensure that in the process of providing the highest levels of quality service to their principals they are able to comply with complicated and detailed instructions, understand and act on complex legal conventions and be fully aware of the rules and regulations applicable to the port environment in which they work. A failure to understand and comply with these conventions and constraints can result in financial penalties, such as costly delays to a vessel or the possibility of fines for the principal or agent, or actual damage to the vessel, port facilities, cargo or the environment.

Given the wide variety of countries, legal jurisdictions and languages represented within its membership, a number of member associations offer education and trainign courses covering a wide variety of subjects, levels, languages, delivery methods and course durations.

FONASBA has now collated information on those courses available across its membership and this is now available through our searchable database that provides summary details of the subjects and courses on offer. The database can be accessed here. All the information in the database has been provided by the associations themselves and further and more comprehensive details can be obtained using the link to the association’s own website provided at the end of each course summary.

Please note that the courses and the relevant information on the following pages are provided by the association concerned and all questions regarding a course should be sent directly to the association.

FONASBA has also developed a virtual booklist containing details of a wide variety of important – and in many cases industry-standard – shipping text books as well as course books issued by our Members that provide education. As with the education course search, the list is searchable by subject and by language. The majority of the books on this list can be purchased by clicking on the link next to the title. This will take you to either the website of the publisher or direct to Amazon.

The book list and search facility will be available here shortly.

FONASBA would like to acknowledge the support of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers in compiling this list. We will also be pleased to receive nominations from Member associations of other books for inclusion on the site. Text and course books published in languages other than English will be particularly welcome
